1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, this proof Jefferson Nickel reverse displays spread toward center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and ELLO of MONTICELLO, with the doubling also affecting both sides of the Monticello building. The spreads increase progressively from left to right across the reverse, and the serifs on the lower portions of UNITED STATES show extremely close tripling — a diagnostic that distinguishes this variety from simpler doubled dies. Obverse die markers include a die gouge right of the lower portion of the second T in TRUST and a gouge between the upper portions of IN and GOD. On the reverse, a die gouge sits over the center of the M in UNUM, a strong die scratch runs next to the rim under STA of STATES, and a gouge appears between the T and E of UNITED. Cross-referenced as CONECA DDR-027 (27-R-II), this proof variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on polished planchets with specially prepared dies, limiting the total possible population to the proof die's working life.
