1956 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009
Error
Description
One of the more strongly expressed doubled die reverses in the 1956 Jefferson nickel census, DDR-009 shows strong doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM — the motto that arcs above Monticello's facade. The "strong" classification places this variety among the more visually dramatic examples from this date, where the hub misalignment produced noticeably separated secondary impressions rather than the subtle thickening seen on light-class varieties. The 1956 Philadelphia Mint issue had a business strike mintage of approximately 35.2 million pieces, and the mid-1950s represent a period when the Jefferson series was well-established in its second decade of production. VarietyVista assigns this variety UVC-926 and die marriage DMR-013. Strong doubled die reverses on Jefferson nickels from this era attract collectors who prefer varieties identifiable without extreme magnification, as the motto doubling on DDR-009 should be apparent at 3-5x with proper lighting. The E PLURIBUS UNUM motto is a frequent site for reverse hub doubling on the Felix Schlag Monticello design due to its raised position and fine lettering.
