1955 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker code UVC-816 and die marriage reference DMR-006, DDR-004 on the 1955 Roosevelt dime presents light hub doubling manifesting as extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, the letters E PLU from PLURIBUS, and both olive and torch stems flanking the torch on the reverse. John Sinnock's original Roosevelt dime reverse, with its compact arrangement of lettering around a central torch flanked by olive and oak branches, concentrates numerous fine elements into a small planchet area — making even light doubling detectable under magnification. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state condition, Stage B represents mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C is late die state (also unconfirmed). The 1955 Philadelphia dime carries a mintage of just over 12 million pieces — a relatively modest figure for a post-war dime and one of the lower mintage business strikes in the Roosevelt silver series. Struck in the 90% silver composition that continued through 1964, this variety appeals to collectors who pursue both doubled die varieties and pre-1965 silver coinage, combining attributable hub doubling with precious metal content.
