Description

Third doubled die reverse identified for the 1955 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Silver Dime, DDR-003 exhibits a light spread affecting the inscriptions OF AMERICA and the denomination DIME on the reverse. While 1955 is a date forever associated with dramatic hub doubling on the Lincoln Cent, the Roosevelt Dime series produced its own set of doubling varieties that year, though with far less visual impact and public recognition. This variety is cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-757 and DMR-005, documented across three die stages: Stage A in Early Die State and Stage B in Mid Die State both remain unconfirmed, while Stage C captures both the reverse and obverse in Late Die State — an unusual situation where the only confirmed specimens come from the die's final production phase, suggesting that earlier-state coins either were not preserved in collectible grades or have not yet been identified by specialists. The light spread on OF AMERICA and DIME is consistent with a minor hub misalignment during die preparation, where the hub and die were fractionally offset during one of the multiple impressions required to fully transfer John R. Sinnock's reverse design into the working die. The 1955 Philadelphia Roosevelt Dime was struck with a mintage of 12,828,381 coins in the 90% silver, 10% copper composition that characterized all Roosevelt Dimes through 1964. DDR-003 occupies the third position in the reverse doubling catalog for this date, distinguishable from DDR-001 and DDR-002 through its specific pattern of spread on the affected lettering and its unique die marker profile.
