1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse is cataloged as Wexler 1955-D WDDR-014 and shows close Class II doubling on UNUM and AMERICA. On the obverse, a heavy die scratch runs below the E of WE and a die scratch extends south from Jefferson's chin. On the reverse, slanted die scratches appear below CE of MONTICELLO, a die scratch extends south from the right side of the M in UNUM, and additional die scratches are visible inside the right arch. A possible over mint mark (WOMM?) has been noted, suggesting the D mint mark may have been punched over a previous impression, though this requires further confirmation. Close Class II doubling results from slight rotation of the hub between impressions during die manufacture, and the term close indicates the spread requires careful magnification for identification. The 1955-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint during a decade of substantial nickel production. The fourteenth doubled die reverse for this date reflects the thoroughness Brian Ribar and fellow attributors have applied to mid-century Jefferson issues.
