1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
ErrorDescription
Brian A. Ribar's attribution of WDDR-010 documents Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with very close spread on UNUM and AMERICA on the 1955-D Jefferson Nickel — the same year that produced the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent, the most celebrated doubled die in American numismatics. While the 1955 cent DDO commands five-figure prices, varieties like WDDR-010 on other 1955-dated denominations represent the broader hub doubling activity occurring across the Mint's die production that year. Obverse die markers include a slanted die scratch below IN and a die scratch connecting the lower portions of W and E in WE. Reverse markers show a die scratch below M of MONTICELLO and another above the right arch. Cross-referenced as CONECA 5-R-II and RPM#2, with Wexler Variety ID 1955-D WDDR-010, this variety carries dual attribution across the CONECA and Wexler systems — the CONECA reference 5-R-II indicating recognition as the second Class II reverse doubled die for the nickel denomination. The RPM#2 cross-reference indicates this die also carries a repunched mintmark, making WDDR-010 a dual-variety die with both hub doubling and mintmark positioning anomalies. Denver struck 74,464,100 Jefferson Nickels in 1955, and the very close Class II spread on UNUM and AMERICA requires careful magnified examination to distinguish from die deterioration doubling that can mimic genuine hub displacement on well-circulated specimens.
