1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Remarkable as a dual-variety die, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel carries both a doubled die reverse and an over mintmark on the same working die. The Class II Distorted Hub Doubling produces very close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, where the secondary hub impression sits nearly atop the primary, creating subtly thickened lettering that requires careful magnification to resolve. Cross-referenced as WOMM-011 and CONECA OMM No. 12, the over mintmark component documents a D mintmark punched over a previous D in a different position — an independent error from the hub doubling that occurred during mintmark application rather than die sinking. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, die markers include heavy die scratches below GOD, a die scratch at the upper left of the long right window of Monticello, and die scratches above the right side of the roof. The convergence of DDR and OMM on a single die makes WDDR-009 especially notable, as collectors can attribute two distinct variety types from one coin.
