1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
ErrorDescription
Classified as Class II distorted hub doubling, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse shows close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1955-D WDDR-007. Class II doubling results from a distortion in the hub or die during the hubbing process — rather than a lateral or rotational shift, the hub surface deforms slightly, producing doubling that appears as design elements that are slightly spread or misshapen rather than cleanly offset. The result on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is a close spread that requires careful examination to distinguish from strike doubling or die deterioration. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge extending from the upper right portion of the B of LIBERTY, while the reverse shows a slanted die scratch inside the right arch of Monticello. The 1955-D was struck at the Denver Mint in substantial quantities. The year 1955 is forever associated with the famous 1955 doubled die obverse cent, but Jefferson Nickel varieties from the same year receive considerably less attention despite offering genuine die variety interest. The Wexler Team's documentation of seven doubled die reverses for this date demonstrates thorough coverage of the 1955-D nickel.
