Description
Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-913 and DMR-019, the 1955-D DDR-008 Jefferson Nickel displays light spread on STATES OF AMERICA — a partial-inscription doubling pattern where only a three-word segment of the full UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend shows detectable hub displacement. The limitation of visible doubling to STATES OF AMERICA while the preceding UNITED remains unaffected suggests the hub displacement vector was oriented to produce its maximum offset in the region of the die corresponding to the middle-to-right portion of the legend arc. Three die stages trace this die's service life: Stage A is the early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B shows mid-die state with a die scratch running north-south to the east of the S of PLURIBUS on the reverse, with the obverse also in MDS; Stage C represents the late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B die scratch east of the S in PLURIBUS provides a secondary diagnostic marker beyond the doubling itself. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag, struck at the Denver Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.2 mm diameter with a plain edge. The 1955-D saw moderate Denver Mint production during the mid-1950s post-war era. As DDR-008, this variety represents the eighth documented doubled die reverse for the 1955-D date-mint, indicating a meaningful population of reverse hub doubling events across the working dies used for this production run. Examination should focus on the STATES OF AMERICA inscription under 7x to 10x magnification, looking for light separation or extra thickness on the letter strokes, then confirming with the north-south die scratch east of the S in PLURIBUS to establish die identity.
