1954 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1954-S WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1954-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling shows as a bar beneath the 4's horizontal bar and a vertical bar inside the 4, and the 5's top curve is slightly doubled below that curve. Obverse Stage A has a short scratch heading SW from the top left of IN's I; a scratch joining the tops of GOD's O and D; strong scratches running parallel to the rim beneath the bust; and a gouge heading NW from the upper end of the 9. On Stage B the scratches at IN and GOD have been abraded away, and a crack crosses the bust's base, above V.D.B. Reverse Stage A has gouges (dots) between the top of UNITED's D and STATES' S; a gouge (dot) below the lower right of CENT's N; and a short, heavy diagonal scratch between the right wheat and the rim, right of the top kernel. Stage B shows a well-abraded die, and the scratch by the right wheat is nearly gone. Eric Axtell submitted Stage A and John A Wexler Stage B. CONECA lists it as 4-O-VIII and Coppercoins as 1954S-1DO-004.
