1954 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Cataloged as the second documented doubled die obverse for the 1954-S Lincoln wheat cent, WDDO-002 carries Wexler Variety ID: 1954-S 1¢ WDDO-002 and was authenticated by the Wexler Team through their die study protocol. Hub doubling on 1954-S obverse dies would have originated at the Philadelphia die manufacturing facility, where all working dies for branch mints were prepared before shipment. The misalignment between successive hub impressions on the WDDO-002 die created discernible separation on obverse design elements — inscriptions, date, and portrait features — that collectors can verify under magnification. Because the 1954-S is one of the terminal issues before San Francisco halted cent production entirely after 1955, it occupies a transitional position in the wheat cent series that attracts both variety hunters and date-set collectors. Attribution of WDDO-002 requires distinguishing it from the other known DDO varieties for this date, particularly WDDO-001, WDDO-003, and WDDO-004, each of which displays a different spread direction and magnitude. Verification against published reference images or submission to a third-party attribution service is recommended for definitive identification.
