1954 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1954-S WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1954-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The letters of IN GOD WE TRUST show a Class II spread toward the center. Obverse Stage A has circular scratches around the outer obverse. On Stage B those scratches are weaker and a chip appears in the upper 4. On Stage C the scratches are gone; two cracks show on the forehead, and another runs down the shoulder to the rim. Stage D adds many north-south scratches ahead of the bust and behind it, and the cracks are heavier. Reverse Stage A has a gouge under the second S of STATES and a scratch through the middle of OF. Stage B shows an abraded die, with a scratch running WNE to ESE through the lower TED of UNITED. Stage C is a second reverse, with two scratches heading WSW from the bottom of STATES' first S. Stage D is a third reverse, with a scratch on the lower part of UNITED. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II and Coppercoins as 1954S-1DO-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
