Description

Holding the primary Wexler doubled die reverse position for the 1953-D Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-001 is a Class II distorted hub doubling variety showing spread on UNUM and AMERICA — the closing words of E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on Felix Schlag's reverse. Class II doubling results from lateral displacement between hub impressions without rotation, producing uniform directional shift rather than the graduated intensity of pivoted varieties. The selective involvement of only UNUM and AMERICA defines the zone where displacement exceeded the detection threshold, concentrating visible doubling at the terminal portions of both legends. Both obverse and reverse are documented in Very Late Die State, indicating significant wear, deterioration, and possible die fatigue marks — collectors should expect softened design details and reduced sharpness on high points alongside the Class II doubling. The 1953-D was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel composition. Examine UNUM and AMERICA under 7x magnification, where the Class II lateral displacement produces thickened or subtly shifted letter strokes.
