Description

Documented as the eleventh doubled die obverse for the 1953 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDO-011 records a misalignment during the die hubbing process that produced visible doubling on the obverse design. During die manufacture, successive hub impressions must align precisely; any deviation creates a doubled image in the working die that transfers to every coin it strikes. The 1953-D was produced at the Denver Mint during a period of strong economic growth in the early 1950s, struck in the familiar bronze composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc that had characterized Lincoln Cents since 1909. Victor David Brenner's portrait of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse and the wheat ears reverse remained unchanged throughout this era.
