1953 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

1953-D WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1953-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A doubled eyelid sits well south of the normal one. Wexler notes the obverse also shows an extremely minor RPM, too minor to list in the Wexler RPM files. Obverse Stage A has a small gouge on the lower tip of the 5; light diagonal scratches heading SE from under the chin; concentric scratches right of the nose and face; light diagonal concentric scratches above LIBERTY's RT; light horizontal scratches near the rim NE of GOD's D; a series of concentric scratches near the rim below VDB; and a group of gouges on the neck, south-southeast of the lower ear. By Stage B the doubled eyelid has grown much weaker, the neck gouges are still strong, most scratches are very weak or gone, and a gouge appears above LIBERTY's E. Reverse Stage A has a series of mostly horizontal scratches through the letters of PLURIBUS; scratches running in several directions through UNUM; a long horizontal scratch from the E of E PLURIBUS through the top of ONE's O; a series of scratches in several directions around the top of CENT's T; concentric scratches above UNITED's UN; and a series of concentric scratches NE of the TES of STATES. On Stage B the Stage A scratches are very weak or gone; light horizontal scratches run under CENT's C, a diagonal scratch below CENT's T is still present, a faded diagonal scratch shows below OF, and faded diagonal scratches head NE from the tops of AMERICA's C and A. Brian Ribar submitted Stage A and John A. Wexler Stage B. Coppercoins lists it as 1953D-1DO-004 and 1953D-1DO-005; Wexler's comments say the group of gouges on the neck is what links this die to those two Coppercoins listings.
