1953 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1953-D WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1953-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling shows right of TRUST's first T and inside its U. Obverse Stage A has a long, mostly vertical scratch through the 5's right edge; a diagonal scratch heading SE from the tail of the 9; a diagonal scratch under the chin running toward the 1; a wavering scratch running mostly east through the front hair curl; another wavering scratch heading north from between the tops of LIBERTY's R and T; and a gouge SE of the B in VDB. On Stage B most of these are weak or gone, though short remnants of the hair-curl scratch can still be seen and the wavering scratch north of LIBERTY's T is weak but visible; a new diagonal scratch heads NNE from the upper left arm of LIBERTY's Y. Reverse Stage A has a series of concentric scratches through the E, P and L of E PLURIBUS; a diagonal scratch heading NW from the top of PLURIBUS' I; die damage through the UNU of UNUM; a gouge (dot) on the left wheat stalk's right edge, well left of CENT's C; and light diagonal scratches through UNITED's D and the first S of STATES. On Stage B only the gouge well left of CENT's C survives from Stage A. New are scratches below the E of E PLURIBUS; a gouge below the UN of UNUM; a series of diagonal scratches right of ONE's E; a scratch running ESE from the left wheat to a point above CENT's C; diagonal scratches through the lower CE of CENT; diagonal scratches across the middle letters of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; diagonal scratches through and below the O of OF; and a gouge right of AMERICA's last A.
