1952 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and LIBERTY identifies DDO-001 on the 1952 Washington Quarter — the primary doubled die obverse listing for this date. Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-0781 with die marriage DMR-006, this variety progresses from EDS (unconfirmed) through Stage B where a light die crack runs across Washington's forehead and upper hair at mid die state, to Stage C with both dies at late die state. The obverse is classified as ODV-005. The die crack across the forehead in Stage B serves as a particularly useful die state marker, as it provides a clear visual threshold separating earlier from later impressions. The 1952 Washington Quarter was struck during the post-war period when silver quarter production was steady, and the DDO-001 designation as the first documented doubled die obverse for this date indicates it was among the earliest varieties cataloged for the year.
