Description

Both legend text and eagle detail show doubling on DDR-002 for the 1951 Philadelphia Washington silver quarter, with light spread visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the eagle's tuft feathers. The involvement of the tuft — the cluster of feathers at the eagle's breast — as a diagnostic element sets this variety apart from doubled die reverses that affect only legend text. John Flanagan's reverse design placed the heraldic eagle at the center, and hub misalignment during die production could affect both the raised lettering around the rim and the sculptural bird detail. Philadelphia struck approximately 35.4 million quarters in 1951 in 90% silver.
