1950 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007

Description

Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1950 Franklin Half Dollar DDO-007 shows light spread and extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD, and the digits 50 of the date. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-079 with die marriage DMR-011, this variety progresses through documented die states: EDS and MDS remain unconfirmed, while the late die state develops a curved die gouge in Franklin's hair between the B and E of LIBERTY, with the reverse also in late die state. The reverse die is identified as RDV-001b. John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar, produced from 1948 to 1963, saw relatively small proof mintages in its early years — the 1950 proof run of 51,386 pieces makes doubled die proof varieties from this date genuinely scarce. Proof coins receive multiple strikes from specially prepared dies, which can make hub doubling easier to detect against the mirror-like fields, and collectors should examine the inscriptions under magnification for the characteristic extra thickness.
