1950 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Light spread on the legend E PLURIBUS UNUM with very light additional spread on AMERICA characterizes DDR-007 on the 1950 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. VarietyVista documents this variety with die markers UVC-862 and DMR-011, tracking three die stages: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both reverse and obverse show Late Die State characteristics. The light nature of the doubling places DDR-007 among the subtler varieties for the 1950 date, requiring careful examination under magnification to distinguish the extra thickness on the UNUM letters from normal strike characteristics. The 1950 Jefferson Nickel from Philadelphia is a key date in the series — with a mintage of only 9.79 million business strikes, it carries the lowest Philadelphia mintage of any post-war Jefferson issue and commands a significant premium even in circulated grades. This low production figure also means fewer die pairs were employed, making die varieties from this date proportionally scarcer in absolute terms. Doubled die reverses on Jefferson Nickels occur through the same hubbing misalignment mechanism that affects all denominations, where slight movement between hub impressions transfers a shifted secondary image to the working die. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design, with its architectural lettering, provides numerous reference points for detecting hub doubling.
