1950 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Cataloged under UVC-861 and DMR-010, the 1950 Proof Jefferson Nickel DDR-006 is a proof-only doubled die reverse variety exhibiting light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and on the last O of MONTICELLO, with the spread increasing from left to right across the legend. The 1950 Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck to the exacting mirror-finish standards of the Philadelphia Mint's proof program, predating the resumption of annual proof sets as a regular product. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is the most diagnostic phase: a strong die gouge appears between pillars one and two of Monticello, and the obverse is confirmed mid-die state — pairing the reverse and obverse markers for reliable Stage B identification. Stage C records a late die state reverse and a die gouge on the nose of the portrait as an obverse late-stage marker, with the reverse also confirmed late die state. The combination of the increasing left-to-right spread and the Stage B inter-pillar gouge makes DDR-006 one of the more specifically documented 1950 Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die entries in the VarietyVista reference.
