1950 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Strong hub doubling with a triple impression on UNUM elevates DDR-002 to one of the more visually striking varieties among 1950 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel reverses. The spread encompasses E PLURIBUS UNUM (with triple on UNUM specifically), UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the last O of MONTICELLO — a comprehensive set of affected elements spanning nearly every reverse inscription on Felix Schlag's design. Strong classification means the secondary hub impression separated far enough to produce readily visible doubling under moderate magnification, and the triple effect on UNUM indicates this portion received three distinguishable hub impressions rather than the standard two. VarietyVista catalogs this as UVC-855 with die marriage DMR-004. The 1950 Philadelphia nickel mintage of approximately 9.8 million pieces represents one of the lowest regular-issue outputs in the Jefferson series, a figure that already commands a premium for the date in all grades. This low mintage also means fewer working dies were manufactured, concentrating the surviving population of any given die variety into a smaller total output than higher-mintage years. The triple impression on UNUM provides the most dramatic diagnostic — three overlapping letter images visible under magnification, with each successive impression slightly offset from the preceding one. The terminal O of MONTICELLO, being a circular letter form, clearly displays directional spread when doubled, making it another efficient confirmation point after the UNUM triple is identified.
