1950 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
DDO-003 on the 1950 Philadelphia Washington quarter shows light doubling affecting both the date and the IN GOD WE TRUST motto — two obverse elements whose simultaneous involvement points to a broad angular displacement during the hubbing process. The 1950 is a notable date in the Washington quarter series: the Philadelphia issue had a relatively modest mintage of approximately 24.9 million pieces, while the 1950-D is considerably scarcer and serves as a key date for the series. Reported by Gil Medina, this doubled die obverse documents a working die from the early post-war period when the John Flanagan design was entering its second decade. The light-class doubling requires careful examination under 7-10x magnification, with particular attention to the date digits and the serifs of the TRUST letters where the secondary impression is most apparent. Washington quarter DDOs from the late 1940s and 1950s are actively collected alongside the more widely publicized 1937 and 1942 doubled dies, and the Wiles catalog provides the standard reference framework for these attributions.
