1948 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Struck during the inaugural year of Franklin Half Dollar production, DDR-002 of the 1948 issue shows light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, the lower bell, and the lower eagle, covering multiple reverse design elements. The obverse is independently listed as DDO-001, creating a dual-variety die pairing from the very first year of the series where both sides carry cataloged hub-doubling features. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-002 and DMR-002, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the reverse at mid-die state with the obverse also at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state awaits confirmation. The pairing of DDR-002 with DDO-001 is particularly noteworthy for an inaugural-year issue, as dual-variety dies from the first year of a new design hold special significance for series collectors. John R. Sinnock designed the Franklin Half Dollar, which debuted in 1948 and was produced through 1963. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 grams, this first-year Franklin Half documents light reverse doubling on a die independently paired with the primary doubled die obverse.
