1948 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Dating to the inaugural year of Franklin Half Dollar production, DDO-002 is the second cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1948 issue, displaying a medium spread on the date. VarietyVista assigns UVC-003 and DMR-003, and the reverse is listed as DDR-003, making this die pair another instance of simultaneous obverse and reverse hub doubling. Stage C places both sides in Late Die State, indicating the coin was struck near the end of the die pair's useful life. John R. Sinnock designed the Franklin Half Dollar, placing Benjamin Franklin's profile on the obverse — the first non-presidential portrait on a regular-issue U.S. coin since the Walking Liberty Half Dollar — and the Liberty Bell on the reverse with a small eagle required by statute for half dollar coinage. Hub doubling from 1948 represents the very origin of the series' die variety record. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm and 12.5 grams, the 1948 Philadelphia issue bore no mintmark.
