Description

Cataloged as RPM-005 (UVC-302, DMR-006) and noted as D/D Rotated CCW, this 1948-D Lincoln wheat cent shows a repunched D mintmark where the secondary impression is rotated counterclockwise from the final placement. Four die stages document this die pair through its entire working life. Stage A is in early die state with markers unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state shows the obverse at mid-die state and a die scratch running east from the lower E of ONE on the reverse. Stage C has both obverse and reverse in late die state. Stage D captures very late die state with maximum wear on both sides. The counterclockwise rotation of the secondary D creates a distinctive angular displacement visible under magnification at the edges of the mintmark letter. The four-stage progression from early through very late die state documents the full lifespan of this die pair at the Denver Mint. The reverse die scratch from the E of ONE in Stage B provides a mid-production diagnostic. Post-war wheat cents from 1948 are common in circulated grades, but attributed RPM varieties with documented rotational repunching carry collector premiums.
