The earliest die state shows die scratches on the obverse in early die state with the reverse in late-mid die state (LMDS), while later MDS and LDS stages remain unconfirmed. The reverse features a Trumpet Tail S mint mark (MMS-002), a distinctive mint mark style where the lower terminal of the S flares outward like a trumpet bell. The 1947-S Jefferson Nickel was among the early postwar San Francisco issues of Felix Schlag's design, and the light spread across multiple obverse elements — motto, LIBERTY, star, and date — suggests a slight rotational or centripetal hub misalignment during die production.
