1947 VDDR VDDR-005
Error
Description
Remarkable for its quadrupled spread — four overlapping impressions rather than the typical two — VDDR-005 shows strong quadrupled doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the 1947 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel. Quadrupled dies are significantly rarer than standard doubled dies because they require three separate hub misalignments during the die manufacturing process, with each successive pass failing to align with the previous impressions. Die stage data carries pending assignments: UVC-??? and DMR-00? indicate final catalog codes had not yet been assigned. Stage A remains in unconfirmed Early Die State. Stage B shows both reverse and obverse reaching confirmed Mid-Die State (MDS). Stage C is unconfirmed Late Die State. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, in its ninth year of production by 1947, features detailed architectural elements and surrounding legends where quadrupled impressions create a distinctive stacked appearance visible under moderate magnification. Philadelphia struck approximately 95 million nickels in 1947 during the post-war economic boom. Cataloged by VarietyVista, VDDR-005's quadrupled designation places it in an elite category of multi-impression die varieties that command heightened collector attention due to the compounded improbability of three successive misalignments during manufacture.
