1947 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Attributed personally by John A. Wexler, this 1947 Jefferson Nickel carries the WDDR-003 doubled die reverse classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling. A strong spread toward the center shows on FIVE CENTS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and ELLO of MONTICELLO, with all spreads increasing in strength from left to right across the reverse. This progressive increase in doubling intensity is characteristic of Class II hub distortion, where the die deformation radiates from a point of origin and produces varying displacement across the die face. Die markers on the reverse include a short die scratch running WSW from the lower left of the S in CENTS, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1947 WDDR-003. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design, featuring Thomas Jefferson's Virginia home, provides multiple lettering elements and architectural details where hub doubling can manifest, and the ELLO of MONTICELLO lettering on this variety confirms that the doubling extends into the building's name as well as the peripheral inscriptions.
