1947 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 1947 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse is cataloged as Wexler 1947 WDDR-004 and displays Class II doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, die scratches appear below Jefferson's chin and a slanted die scratch below the 19 in the date. On the reverse, a short die scratch extends from the second A of AMERICA to the right side base of the Monticello building, and two die dots appear to the right of the lower portion of the second L in MONTICELLO. Class II hub doubling results from rotation of the hub between impressions during die manufacture, producing a spread that pivots around a central axis rather than shifting uniformly in one direction. The 1947 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel was struck in the standard copper-nickel composition restored after the wartime silver alloy experiment of 1942 through 1945. The return to the pre-war 75% copper and 25% nickel alloy in 1946 meant that 1947 was only the second year of post-war nickel production.
