1947 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Whaden Curtis, the 1947 WDDR-006 is a Jefferson nickel doubled die reverse distinguished by an unusual directional progression in its Class II distorted hub doubling. The doubling appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM with intensity increasing from left to right across the motto, showing its strongest expression on UNUM. Additional doubling is visible on AMERICA, CENTS, and LLO of MONTICELLO. This left-to-right intensification pattern is characteristic of a pivot-influenced distortion where the hub displacement was not uniform across the die face. The obverse carries a die gouge below the S of TRUST, while the reverse shows a large die gouge to the left of the center semicircular window and a slanted die scratch to the lower right of the small right window. Cataloged under Wexler designation 1947 WDDR-006, this post-war Jefferson nickel variety rewards careful examination of the full UNUM inscription, where the doubling reaches its peak intensity and the extra thickness becomes most apparent under moderate magnification.
