1947 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Strong spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM that decreases in intensity from left to right distinguishes DDR-004 as one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses for the 1947 Jefferson nickel. The directional decrease — strongest on the E and progressively lighter through UNUM — indicates the hub displacement axis ran at an angle to the motto, producing maximum separation at one end and convergence at the other. A strong classification means the secondary image is plainly visible under moderate magnification, making this a relatively accessible variety for collectors new to die variety attribution. Cataloged under UVC-837 / DMR-005 by VarietyVista, die stage progression documents three states: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C with both reverse and obverse confirmed in Late Die State. The 1947 Jefferson nickel returned to the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel composition after the wartime silver alloy years, and Philadelphia's output provided ample population for variety hunters.
