This characterization — spread plus thickness — indicates the hub misalignment produced both directional separation visible at certain angles and an overall heavier appearance to the affected letters. Philadelphia produced approximately 95.0 million nickels in 1947, the second year of post-war standard-composition production after the wartime silver alloy period ended. Cataloged as UVC-835 with die marriage DMR-003 in the VarietyVista system, DDR-002 is the second documented doubled die reverse for the date. The dual-character doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM makes this variety somewhat easier to detect than pure spread or pure thickness varieties, since multiple visual cues are present simultaneously.
