1947-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Second in the Wexler-documented obverse doubled die census for the 1947-D Washington quarter, WDDO-002 exhibits a counterclockwise spread from a pivot at approximately the 7 o'clock position on BERTY of LIBERTY. This Class V (Pivoted Hub) doubling places the pivot axis near the lower left of the die face, causing letters above and to the right of that point to receive increasingly displaced secondary impressions as their distance from the pivot grows. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID: 1947-D 25¢ WDDO-002, this variety was struck at the Denver Mint on John Flanagan's Washington quarter design that has been in continuous production since 1932. Two distinctive die markers provide secondary identification points: on the obverse, a small die gouge sits to the right of the bottom of the I in LIBERTY, while the reverse carries a die gouge touching the right underside of the first S in STATES. These die-specific defects serve as fingerprints unique to this working die pair. Denver struck approximately 15.34 million Washington quarters in 1947, a post-war production year when the Mint was restoring normal coinage operations after the wartime disruptions. The counterclockwise pivot from 7 o'clock produces a specific pattern: the B of LIBERTY, closest to the pivot point, shows minimal displacement, while the Y at the opposite end of the inscription exhibits the greatest rotational separation. No additional cross-references from CONECA or other attribution services are currently known. Collectors should first locate the die gouge to the right of I on the obverse and the gouge at the first S of STATES on the reverse to confirm the correct die pair, then examine BERTY under 15x magnification for the progressive rotational displacement characteristic of pivoted hub doubling.
