1947-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as WDDO-001 for the 1947-D Washington Quarter, this doubled die obverse shows spread towards center on LIBERTY, slight doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, and separation on the 7 in the date. Struck at Denver in 90% silver and 10% copper, John Flanagan's classic Washington portrait provides the canvas where this hub doubling is best observed. The obverse die carries a die scratch running from the west-northwest to east-southeast below the B of LIBERTY, along with a die crack traversing the base of the bust. The reverse die exhibits more extensive cracking: one crack extends from the A in STATES down the eagle's right wing and curves above the first R in QUARTER, while a second crack traces through E PLURIBUS to the upper left wing then descends to the second A in AMERICA. These progressive die cracks suggest the die saw significant use before retirement. As the first doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1947-D quarter, WDDO-001 holds a primary position in the attribution sequence. Pre-1965 Washington Quarters carry inherent bullion value alongside their numismatic interest as die varieties.
