1946-S Over Mint Mark OMM-001

Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-511, this 1946-S Lincoln Wheat Cent OMM-001 is an S/D South over mint mark — an S mint mark punched over a D mint mark, with the remnant D visible to the south of the final S position. Cross-referenced as FS-511, this variety is one of the most recognized over mint marks in the Lincoln Cent series. Cataloged by VarietyVista (UVC-281, DMR-040), three die stages are documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B advances to mid-die state on both sides, and Stage C is cataloged as late die state though this remains unconfirmed. Over mint marks occurred when the Mint inadvertently used the wrong mint mark punch first, then corrected the error by punching the intended letter over it. On this variety, a San Francisco S was punched over a Denver D, leaving traces of the underlying D beneath and south of the S. The bronze Lincoln Wheat Cent (1909-1958) was designed by Victor David Brenner, and over mint mark varieties from this era are eagerly pursued by specialists, with FS-511 designation ensuring this variety appears in the standard reference guides used by dealers and collectors.
