1945-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
San Francisco's 1945 cent production reached 181,770,000 pieces — the facility's last truly massive wartime output before postwar adjustments reshaped its role in the Mint system. Struck on shell case alloy planchets made from recycled brass cartridge casings, the 1945-S cent carries the distinctive golden-brass tone characteristic of the 1944-1945 wartime composition. WDDO-001 is the first doubled die obverse cataloged for this issue, indicating it was among the earliest such varieties discovered or submitted for attribution on the 1945-S date. Hub doubling on Lincoln Cent obverses manifests on Victor David Brenner's portrait and the surrounding inscriptions — LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date — where a secondary hub impression was transferred at a slight positional offset during die sinking. Each doubled die obverse represents a unique working die, and the catalog number serves as its permanent reference identifier within the Wexler attribution system. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1945-S 1¢ WDDO-001.
