1945-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011
Error
Description
Numismatic documentation of mid-1940s cent production reveals a Mint system operating at peak capacity while managing wartime alloy transitions. San Francisco produced over 181 million cents in 1945 alone, each struck on shell case alloy planchets that would be discontinued the following year when the Mint returned to standard bronze. WDDO-011 is the eleventh doubled die obverse cataloged for this issue, rounding out a substantial catalog of San Francisco die varieties from the final wartime year. The obverse of every Lincoln Wheat Cent — from the first 1909 V.D.B. through the last 1958 issue — carries Brenner's portrait of Abraham Lincoln facing right, with the national motto above, LIBERTY to the left, and the date to the right. These design elements, rendered in varying degrees of relief and detail, provide the diagnostic areas where hub doubling is detected and classified. Each new variety expands the historical record of die production at a given facility. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1945-S 1¢ WDDO-011.
