1945 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1706 with die marker reference DMR-032, this 1945-S Lincoln Wheat Cent displays medium extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and WE TRUST — a spread pattern indicating a hub doubling event that affected the most prominent obverse legends and date simultaneously. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B in Mid Die State shows die scratches running north-south on the obverse with the reverse in MDS, and Stage C in Late Die State shows the scratches worn away with the reverse in LDS. The mintmark is classified as MMS-004 (trumpet tail), indicating a style where the S exhibits a flared serif at its lower terminal — making this a combination variety pairing obverse hub doubling with a specific mintmark style designation. San Francisco Mint production during the final year of World War II. The progressive die state documentation allows collectors to identify where their specimen falls in the die's working life based on the presence or absence of the north-south scratches. Brass (copper-zinc) composition.
