Description
With die markers UVC-813 and DMR-045 providing precise identification, DDR-006 on the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread on E PLURIBUS — the opening words of the national motto on the reverse. This wartime silver alloy nickel (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese) was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the final year of the emergency composition program. The large S mintmark above Monticello's dome distinguishes wartime San Francisco nickels from pre-war and post-war issues, which carry a much smaller mintmark near the base. Light spread on E PLURIBUS means doubling is most evident on the first two words of the motto, potentially diminishing by UNUM — a pattern consistent with hub doubling where the misalignment direction aligns more closely with certain letter positions.
