Description
Exhibiting light spread on UNUM in E PLURIBUS UNUM, DDR-004 on the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel is identifiable through die markers UVC-811 and DMR-043. This coin belongs to the wartime silver alloy series (1942-1945), when the standard copper-nickel composition was replaced with 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese to conserve nickel for military use during World War II. Wartime nickels are immediately recognizable by their large mintmark — P, D, or S — placed prominently above the dome of Monticello, a departure from the small mintmark used before and after the war. The oversized S on this San Francisco issue sits near E PLURIBUS UNUM, the area where DDR-004's doubling appears. The die markers UVC-811 and DMR-043 serve as fingerprints for this working die, allowing collectors to confirm attribution even when the light spread is subtle. The wartime silver composition gives these coins a distinctive grayish appearance.
