1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009
Error
Description
Ninth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1945 Jefferson Nickel, DDO-009 presents light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST — the motto positioned along the left obverse field above Jefferson's portrait. The VarietyVista catalog assigns UVC-204 and DMR-014, with detailed die stage tracking across three stages: Stage A documents a die gouge dot in the field left of LIBERTY and notes the reverse is listed as RPM-013, both in Early Die State. Stage B shows obverse and reverse in Mid Die State without specific new markers. Stage C, the Late Die State, reveals a die chip in the upper hair of Jefferson's portrait and a die break above the right side of Monticello's roof on the reverse. The pairing with RPM-013 on the reverse is a significant attribution detail — this die pair combines a doubled die obverse with a repunched mintmark reverse, making specimens doubly interesting to variety collectors. The 1945 Jefferson Nickel was struck during the final year of the wartime silver alloy composition (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese), a substitute adopted from 1942 through 1945 to conserve nickel for military use. Wartime nickels are identifiable by the large mintmark placed above Monticello's dome on the reverse. The VarietyVista notation that the reverse is "LISTED as RPM-013" directly connects this obverse die to a specific reverse pairing, establishing a die marriage that collectors can use to confirm attribution of specimens displaying both varieties.
