Description

Seventh in the sequence of documented doubled die obverses for the 1945 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, DDO-007 displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST on coins struck from the wartime silver alloy. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-790 and DMR-084, the doubling produces extra thickness visible under magnification, consistent with a minor hub shift between successive impressions during die sinking. Three die states are documented: Stage A in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State. The wartime alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese was mandated to free nickel metal for military applications, and the large P above Monticello's dome served as a visual signal that these coins contained silver rather than standard copper-nickel. With at least seven doubled die obverses cataloged for the 1945 Philadelphia wartime nickel, the date shows meaningful variety density reflecting the volume of dies prepared for a high-demand final war year. DDO-007 documents an individual working die bearing its own unique pattern of hub doubling from the die preparation process.
