1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005

Description

Fifth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1945 Jefferson Nickel in wartime silver composition, DDO-005 presents a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. VarietyVista assigns UVC-246 and DMR-056. The reverse is also listed as RPM-055, indicating the same die pair exhibits a repunched mintmark — the large P above Monticello's dome was punched more than once at slightly different positions. This dual attribution makes the die pair doubly collectible. The 1945 Jefferson Nickel was struck in the emergency wartime alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, adopted in late 1942 to conserve nickel for military use. The oversized P mintmark above Monticello's dome identified the silver composition and marked the first time Philadelphia used a mintmark on circulating coinage. Felix Schlag's obverse portrait and Monticello reverse appeared on 21.2mm planchets. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST for the light doubled spread, and check the P mintmark for RPM-055 repunching to confirm full attribution.
