Description

Bearing dual attribution as both a doubled die obverse and part of a die pair with a documented repunched mint mark reverse, the 1945 Jefferson Nickel DDO-004 shows light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Cross-referenced under UVC-216 and DMR-026 in the VarietyVista system, the reverse is listed as RPM-025, meaning the same coin can exhibit both obverse doubling and reverse mint mark repunching — a combination elevating its interest among variety collectors. Die state progression includes diagnostic die cracks: Stage B features a crack through the head to the rim at approximately K-11:30 in Mid Die State, with a secondary crack southwest to the forehead. Three stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State. The wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese gives these 1945 Philadelphia nickels both numismatic and precious metal value. The large P above Monticello identified the wartime composition during 1942-1945. DDO-004 demonstrates the layered complexity possible in die variety attribution.
