Description

Fifth cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1945-D Mercury dime, RPM-005 displays D/D North displacement — the initial D punch was placed too low and the corrective punch shifted the mintmark northward (upward) to its final position. This northward direction is one of the most commonly documented RPM orientations on Mercury dimes, reflecting a recurring tendency for initial mintmark placement to fall slightly below the intended position. Denver's wartime production of approximately 40.25 million Mercury dimes in 1945 — the series' final year — demanded heavy die usage, and at least nine RPMs have been documented for this date alone, testament to both the volume of dies produced and the thorough examination this terminal-year issue has received. Adolph A. Weinman's design, which had served since 1916, was about to give way to John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt dime, making 1945 the last vintage to carry the winged Liberty cap on the obverse and the fasces on the reverse.
