1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

The 1945-D WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Denver Mint Mercury Dime, the Winged Liberty Head design by Adolph A. Weinman produced from 1916 through 1945. Slight doubling is visible on the date, most easily detected on the horizontal crossbar of the 4, where the secondary impression creates a discernible thickening from the primary digit. While the obverse lacks significant additional die markers, the reverse provides a valuable attribution aid: the reverse die carries a repunched mintmark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1945-D 10c WRPM-003, showing a D/D Northeast. This pairing of a doubled die obverse with a repunched mintmark reverse makes WDDO-004 a dual-variety coin — appealing to collectors who prize examples displaying multiple die anomalies from a single striking. The 1945-D Mercury Dime was among the final issues of Weinman's design before its replacement by the Roosevelt Dime in 1946, placing this variety at the very end of the Mercury Dime production era. Late-date Mercury Dimes survive in large numbers, giving variety hunters ample material to search.
