Error
Description
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, WDDR-006 of the 1945-D Jefferson nickel exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and MO of MONTICELLO, with all spreads decreasing from left to right. This left-to-right diminishing pattern is characteristic of a distorted or tilted hub during the die-making process. Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, this coin bears the large mintmark above Monticello as mandated for the silver-composition issues of 1942-1945. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above the second T of TRUST, while the reverse shows a die crack south from the E of CENTS to the rim and another crack from the upper left side of the building through column 2 to the steps. A possible D/D repunched mintmark adds further interest. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1945-D WDDR-006.
