1945-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

A remarkable triple variety, this 1945-D Jefferson Nickel WDDR-004 was attributed by Brian A. Ribar and also carries the WDDO-003 obverse doubling and WRPM-032 D/D Tilted repunched mintmark designations. Struck in the wartime 35% silver alloy at the Denver Mint during the final year of emergency composition, it presents three distinct varieties on a single coin. The reverse displays Class II close doubling on UNITED STATES, with the spread increasing from left to right and showing its strongest expression on AMERICA. Close doubling produces tight separation between the original and doubled impressions, requiring careful magnification to fully appreciate the extent of displacement across the inscription. The large D mintmark above Monticello's dome — placed there specifically to distinguish wartime silver issues — shows evidence of being punched into the die at a tilted angle and then corrected, creating the D/D repunched mintmark attributed as WRPM-032. Triple varieties from the wartime silver series are uncommon, and finding all three attributions confirmed on a single specimen makes WDDR-004 one of the more desirable Denver Mint varieties from 1945.
