1945-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA DDR-004 and RPM#22, attributed by Tony Russo, the 1945-D Jefferson nickel Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002 is a combo variety paired with WRPM-029. A very close Class II distorted hub spread appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA, increasing in strength from left to right. The reverse die also carries WRPM-029 mint mark markers: a die gouge (dot) below and another to the right of the small right window, a large die crack from the upper portion of the long left window to the center of the steps, a die crack running north from the O of OF, and a die crack from the top of the dome to below the small right semicircular window. The obverse is in late die state, with a short die crack in Jefferson's hair at the 12 o'clock position running to the rim. The 1945-D Jefferson nickel was struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, identifiable by the large mint mark placed above Monticello — an important premium consideration for this coin. The WDDR-002 / WRPM-029 combo makes this variety particularly sought after by Jefferson nickel specialists.
